The Washington Demon Wrestling teams, to date, have raised approximately $4500  during their “Takedown Cancer” events!  On Jan 13, the varisty team hosted their 2nd annual “Takedown Cancer meet” with Mt Pleasant.  The Washington wrestlers wore special black singlets with a pink demon logo on the front and the pink cancer ribbon on the back, pink shoelaces and some had creative pink headgear !  They sold pink frosted cookies, had hat day at the Jr High and High School,  held a 50/50 raffle, collected donations at Serenity Salon & Spa and Fareway and sold “Takedown Cancer” t-shirts.  They also sold raffle tickets for duffle bags which were done by The Embroidery Barn / Linda Marie with special wrestling designs.   The high school, jr high and youth wrestlers, managers and cheerleaders collected a sizable amount of donations!  On February 26, a check for $4000 was given to the Washington Relay for Life and a donation will also be give to the U of I Dance Marathon.

We have been notified by the American Cancer Society/Midwest Division that Washington High School Wrestling team held the ONLY wrestling event in Iowa benefiting Relay for Life / American Cancer Society.  As part of the extension of the Coaches vs Cancer program to all sports, the American Cancer Society Youth Initiatives staff in Iowa will be attending the Wrestling Coaches Clinic in Des Moines at the end of October and we have been asked to furnish our Takedown Cancer team picture for the ad!  We are hoping that more wrestling teams around the state of Iowa will get involved, show their support and HELP TAKEDOWN CANCER!

It all started because our Washington Demon High School wrestling team wanted to do something to raise awareness for cancer!!!!

So, we put together a very special evening on January 26, 2010.  Helping Takedown Cancer was the theme for our home wrestling meet that night against Fairfield and Van Buren.  The wrestlers wore special black singlets with a pink demon logo and the pink cancer ribbon printed on the back along with pink shoelaces!   It was such a special event because unfortunately, cancer has touched many of us in our community!   Takedown Cancer was also our team theme for our youth wrestling tournament in February!

Each high school wrestler collected at least $50 in donations with some collecting much more!  We also sold pink frosted cookies, had a 50/50 raffle at the meet, donations were collected at Fareway  & we sold “takedown cancer” t-shirts.

This group of young people raised a net total of $4,000 in a very short time!  We donated $1,000 to the University of Iowa Dance Marathon and $3,000 to the Washington Relay for Life!!!!!!

We had a “Takedown Team” at the Washington Relay for Life as well on June 19, 2010.

We hope everyone will continue to HELP TAKEDOWN CANCER
